THE JOURNEY OF A PURPOSE DRIVEN LEADER: VALENTINE YOUYOU KWEGAH
In the halls of the University of Nairobi, Valentine Youyou Kwegah is far more than just a second-year law student; she is a dynamic force of leadership, advocacy, and service. Her story is a testament to the power of taking leaps of faith and the profound impact one person can have when they lead with a heart for others.
Valentine’s leadership journey began the moment she stepped onto campus and contested for the role of class representative. While many view leadership as a position of authority, Valentine quickly realized it is actually a masterclass in patience, inclusivity, and consultation.
However, her path wasn't always clear. Like many high-achieving students, she initially felt the crushing pressure of law school, watching her peers excel and wondering if she was doing enough. In a moment of brave self-reflection, she realized a vital truth: success isn't about doing everything; it’s about doing what aligns with your passion and purpose.
This level of self-awareness is rare in a second-year student. By choosing passion over pressure, Valentine has modeled a healthy approach to academic life that many of her peers can look up to.
This focus led her to the Kenya Model United Nations (KMUN). Starting as a quiet observer, she eventually joined the International Law Commission, where her research skills flourished. Her dedication culminated in her receiving the Best Paper award for her work on sea-level rise and international law during a mock debate.
Her influence extends well beyond the research desk. As part of the Oration Hub, Valentine has evolved into a skilled speech evaluator and adjudicator. Perhaps her most impressive feat in this arena was training the Public Speaking Champion at the 2025 East African Debates Championships—a clear sign that her leadership is about elevating others as much as herself.
Valentine’s most personal mission lies in her commitment to human rights and mental health. She is the founder of Scouts for Gender-Based Violence and Mental Health Awareness, an initiative that brings together students from multiple universities, including Maseno and JKUAT.
Her work isn't just theoretical. She has organized awareness walks across Kenya—from Kilifi to Nairobi—and has pioneered programs at Jamhuri Boys’ High School focusing on positive masculinity. By addressing the mental health of the boy child, she is filling a critical gap in social advocacy.
Valentine’s initiative to include young men in the conversation about GBV and mental health shows a sophisticated understanding of social change. She isn't just protesting problems; she is building solutions through education and empathy.
Despite her long list of accolades, including her roles as a national scout and an assistant at the Dean of Students’ Office, Valentine remains refreshingly grounded. She is the first to admit she isn't perfect; she grapples with impatience and the tendency to overthink.
Away from the law books and podiums, Valentine is a vibrant, social individual who loves music, deep conversations, and "talking and talking"😂 with friends. She even enjoys singing, playfully noting she doesn't do it perfectly, but she does it with heart.😂
Valentine Youyou Kwegah is a willing leader who prioritizes authenticity over perfection. Whether she is helping a fellow student find counseling at the Wellness Center or advocating for international law, she remains a young woman committed to growth, service, and making a lasting impact on the world around her.
What makes Valentine truly captivating is her balance. She is a powerhouse of productivity, yet she never loses sight of her own humanity or the importance of self-care. She is exactly the kind of advocate the legal profession needs.
We see you Valentine Kwegah, and we are rooting for you!
