4 LESSONS I LEARNT FROM LAW SCHOOL

As promised, here are some of the key life lessons I’ve learned throughout law school, lessons that shaped me just as much as the legal concepts did.

1.    DEVELOP A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
There are truly no words that can fully capture the value of this, but let me try. A relationship with God has literally saved my life. Life is tough, and doing it without God only makes it harder. I mean walking with God under Grace has truly helped me.

I may not preach a whole sermon right now (though I absolutely could), but what I mean is allowing the Grace of God to enter your life, to renew your mind, strengthen you, bring clarity, transform you, and constantly remind you that you are nothing less than a Child of the Most High God.

Discovering who I am started with understanding who I was created to be. The mindset that God desires for you isn’t built through striving, it’s received through surrender to the Holy Spirit.

2.    GET CLEAR ON YOUR GOALS
Just like the previous point, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to have clear goals and a plan to accomplish them. The Bible says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” and how true that is. Without vision, you’re simply drifting.
Start by writing your goals down. I recommend creating a list of 300 things you want in life. You don’t have to complete the list all at once just begin. Think of it as a wishlist. And while writing, don’t worry about how these things will happen or whether you’re capable of achieving them. Simply ask yourself: “If I had no limitations, what would I want?” Then write those things down.

Habakkuk 2:2 says, “Write the vision and make it plain.” Would God ask us to write the vision if it wasn’t important?

I once heard Earl Nightingale say, “The happiest people in life are those who know what they want and set boldly out to find it.” Writing your goals is your way of asking God for the life you desire. And God said, “Ask, and you shall receive.” So ask, don’t be afraid. And if you are afraid, all the more reason to ask boldly.

If you don’t accomplish your goals in one year, you might in two. If not in two, then three. If not in three, then four. But don’t settle for a life you don’t want simply because you were too scared to ask.

3.    ELEVATE YOUR MINDSET
Getting a plan for personal development and growth can truly elevate your life. Our minds are powerful tools, they can either build us up or break us down. Solomon, the wisest man, wrote “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he”. Attitude is incredibly powerful. It can bring remarkable results, but it must be trained and renewed daily.

When it comes to elevating your mindset, there's so much to unpack, but let me put it simply: if you start with the belief that you can’t do something, you're already defeated before you even try. This doesn’t mean that having a positive attitude will eliminate failure from your life. But it does mean that your attitude toward failure will determine whether you bounce back or give up.

Take the job market, for example. It's no secret, it’s flooded. But what’s your mindset about it? I choose to believe that God will make room for me: at the right time, in the right place, with the right salary, and the right opportunities for growth. With that belief, I’m not afraid to go all in. I’m not afraid to work hard or push myself, because I know I’m attracting the right opportunities that align with God’s plan for me.

But if your mindset is, “I’ll never get a job” or “I’ll probably end up in a low-paying role in this economy,” then naturally you’ll start wondering, “What’s the point of trying hard?” And that’s how a poor mindset sabotages your potential.

So invest in yourself, read the books, listen to personal development podcasts, and most importantly, trust God. As you grow, you’ll start attracting everything that’s meant for you.

4.    STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHER PEOPLE

I know you’ve heard this before, but I had to add my voice to the chorus: Stop comparing yourself to others. It’s one of the quickest ways to lose sight of your purpose and diminish your confidence.

Often, you’ll come across people who seem to be doing better than you, maybe they’re more talented, further ahead, or simply appear to have it all figured out. Especially after school, it hits hard. You hear that one of your classmates already landed a great job while you're still at home, relying on your parents. Then you open LinkedIn, and it feels like everyone is posting about new positions, promotions, or big wins, and suddenly your whole day feels ruined. The pressure kicks in, and before long, you’re overwhelmed or even spiraling into discouragement.

Pause. Breathe. Calm down.

This is exactly why having your own personal goals is so important. When you’re focused on your own journey, you’re not consumed by what others are achieving. You realize that you and your classmate might have done the same degree, but you’re on completely different paths. And that’s okay.

Give yourself grace. Life is a process. If you keep obsessing over what everyone else is doing, you’ll get distracted from the unique path God designed for you, a path that might lead to something even greater than you imagined.

Comparing yourself is like telling God what He’s doing in your life isn’t enough. Don’t limit His work by constantly measuring your progress against someone else’s timeline.

As Earl Nightingale once said, “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.” That means if you know where you’re going and you’re taking steps toward it, you are already a success. But it must be your path, not someone else’s.

I could go on and on, God has truly helped me learn and grow in so many ways. But I’ll end it here for today. I hope you enjoyed this little break from the usual legal content and that something in this post encouraged or inspired you.

Feel free to leave a comment below, I’d love to hear your thoughts or what resonated with you most. Next week, we’ll get back to breaking down legal concepts as usual. Thank you so much for your continued support. Stay tuned!

Until then, take care and keep growing.
